Charlemagne was King of the Franks, and he is known for uniting much of western and central Europe in the early Middle Ages.

Charlemagne improved the lives of the people he ruled in Europe because he valued and encouraged arts, culture and education. It changed the routine and lives of his subjects, and the results of these activities made life better in his realm.
