The word "commit" comes from two Latin words which are "com-" and "mittere". "Com-" means with and "mittere" means to put or send. "Commit" is a late English word which comes from the Latin word "Comittere" that means "to join or to entrust". At present, the word "commit" means to devote or to dedicate.
