A long poem told about heroic deeds is called an epic. The first epic poem was written 4,000 years ago. Most epics are about the length of a decent sized book, telling the long and detailed account of a hero's journey.
Midevil times guess, or the dark ages, I hears some Irish monks were good authors during the Dark ages. O_O
