Direct Values - these are resources that are gathered from plant and animal sources. Examples of these are grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, fuel, wood, rubber and many others. If they are harvested and consumed directly, they are called consumptive value, and those that are marketed or sold are called productive value.

Indirect Values - these are the benefits of biodiversity that are not easily quantifiable such as supporting other biological life, social and aesthetic value and environmental service value.
