Why did patricicians want to prevent plebians from holding important positions in Roman society and government?

A shorter and more direct answer then that of the previous poster would be because in the case of plebeians holding more power, the power which was held by patricians in general, would be "watered down" as it would be dispersed among more people. But not all patricians were trying to prevent this indeed.
