The process by which DNA is copied to RNA is called transcription, and that by which RNA is used to produce proteins is called translation.

mRNA molecules are synthesized from one strand of DNA. The mRNA strand transports the DNA information for a particular gene from the nucleus of the cell to a ribosome for protein synthesis. Once the mRNA strand directs protein synthesis, the strand is destroyed. The transcription of a gene is controlled by the cell.
