Not sure which war--but social conservative thinking is typically linked to religion especially in the US.
Following World War II in particular a rise of conservative thinking occurred to fight communism. Being communist USSR was an atheist country (or perceived as one) the US must fight it with Christian values and a God-driven agenda. Christianity resurfaced in the US with God popping up in the Pledge of Allegiance for the first time and God mentioned often in political speeches.
