Leapfrogging or Island-hopping was the strategy employed by the US in WW2 in the Pacific arena. They could bomb certain areas and weaken the Japanese bases on the island before sending in men. This allowed us to take islands quicker and more easily. Also in turn it got us to Japan faster with a lower loss of life.
