A singular subject requires a singular verb.
In English, the subject and the verb have to agree - this means that they have to have the same number. So, if a noun is singular, the verb will be too; if the noun is plural, the verb will also be plural.
For example: That girl IS pretty (you can't say are because the girl is singular)
