[tex]\sec x \cos(-x)-\sin^2x = \sec x \cos x - \sin^2x[/tex], since cos is an even function. (This means cos(-x) = cos(x))

[tex]=1-\sin^2x[/tex], since [tex]\sec x \cos x = 1[/tex]

[tex]= \cos^2x[/tex], by [tex]\sin^2x+\cos^2x=1[/tex].
