Northern colonies were created mainly for religious freedom, as they were created by settlers who were attempting to escape persecution in their previous European countries. The Pilgrims are a prime example of this: they came to America because they were facing oppression in Europe and were seeking religious freedom, while on the other hand, most southern and Mid-Atlantic colonies were created for economic benefits. In general, religious freedom was the main reason for the creation of the northern colonies.
