Why are digital signals more reliable than magnetic tapes in recording and transmitting information during a flight

They're not really, they're more convenient. Either one is basically 100% reliable. The problem is that tape is usually on the flight, so you have to find the crash site before you get the data. If the data is transmitted and stored somewhere else, it's available before the wreckage is found.
