this is an absolute value problem.

Subst. -5 for x and 5 for y:  |-(-5) - 2(5)|  =  |5 - 10| = |-5| = 5 (answer)

x =  -5
y = 5

|-(-5) - 2(5)|
| 5 - 10|

Since this is a absolute value, it can only be positive

|-5| = 5
