Railroad systems basically help by promoting growth of a nation economically and relative safety of travel. Travel that occurred prior to the use of trains was dangerous, i.e. wagon trains.
Trains also allowed materials and goods to be transported across a nation and beyond, giving people along the route a way to continue to build and thrive in previously remote areas.
