The 1st stanza seems to introduce the writer who is a child. He was dreaming about her father and his sadness. It might reveal her understanding of her father been dying (a slow, painful death) Figuratively, it might show the responsibilities that overwhelmed him and took away his youth. he might have lost his chance of having fun in life and it made him feel older.
