The Medici were a family of Bankers. They had banks throughtout Europe and were the official bank of the Pope. The connection to the Pope made them respected by others who decided to bank with them as well. They became extremelly wealthy and powerful.
Florence was home to the Medici and it prospered due to their patronage and many commssions in the areas art art, science, philosophy, etc...
