how can you remove negative counters from a set of positive counters? What is the net effect?

As in 6-(-2)=8 and 5-(-3)

Two signs that are the same become positive. To different signs become negative. Do subtraction the normal way and pretend the symbols aren't there. Than add the symbol according to the rules.
