Sunlight exposure is necessary for the creation of vitamin D. People who lived in latitudes far from the equator evolved light skin to aid in increased vitamin D absorption. Previtamin D3 can be produced in the skin by those with light (type II) skin five to ten times more quickly than by those with dark (type V) skin.
