How did women help improve conditions for soldiers?

The women were nurses who provided care for wounded soldiers. They would also clean up and cook for the soldiers, which helped with conditions. Not only that, but in terms of mentally, the presence of a woman was "relaxing", and sometimes females provided entertainment.
