In a persuasive essay, you persuade the reader with your words. In an argumentative essay, you make a point and argue that it is superior.

The difference is that persuasive essays generally want someone to do something, rather than argumentative essays which want to prove one side (opposite side) wrong and one side (the one you write about) right.
