In WWI, Trench warfare was the most commonly fought battles. It consisted of Soldiers trying to out-snipe each other, and other soldiers rushing towards the enemy. The trenches was a very deadly place, and melee fights with knives and trench clubs broke out a lot between enemy soldiers.
