The smooth semi-transparent membrane that covers or holds the kidney in its shape is known as the RENAL CAPSULE. It is composed of fibrous layers of tissues that are also covered with layers of adipose tissue or fat. This layer of the kidney protects it from trauma and damage, preventing the kidneys from malfunctioning.
