A paleontologist would see a normal spread of fossils layered out with a thin part containing many more fossils than anywhere else. This is where the mass extinction happened. Furthermore, the paleontologist could use radioactive dating to find how long ago the extinction happened. There might be volcanic ash or others signs of what caused the extinction located in the layer.
