Why did it take so much time and effort to construct the panama canal?

The Panama Canal took 10+ years to construct because construction workers only worked on it once every two weeks. This was because they were faced with difficult weather trying to build it. Difficulties such as land sliding, rain, costs, inadequate machinery, and the threat of yellow fever and malaria.
