Use the quadratic formula to solve the first one
[tex]x = \frac{-3+ \sqrt{ 3^{2}-4(2)(5) } }{2*2} [/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{-3 + \sqrt{9 - 40} }{4} [/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{-3 + \sqrt{-31} }{4} [/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{-3 + i \sqrt{31} }{4} [/tex]

Final answer is D

2nd problem is as simple
[tex] \sqrt{a - r} + m = y[/tex]  - Given
[tex] \sqrt{a - r} = y - m [/tex] - Subtract m from both sides
a - r =y^2 - 2my + m^2 - square both sides
a = y^2 - 2my + m^2 + r - add r to both sides

Answer on this one is D
