Why is the geologic record important to scientists?

It is important to scientists because it can help them to find patterns in past devastating natural events--volcanoes, earthquakes, etc-- and use those patterns to try to predict future events, and to try to help take early preventative measures to minimize loss of life to these natural disasters.
It's geologists' way of predicting Earth's underground weather :P
