What purposes of government do you see in action in everyday life?

There are many purposes of government that one can see in action in everyday life. For example in the United States, the police forces, judges, and other civil servant positions function in order to benefit society and keep it functioning properly. The public education system is also an example of government in action today. Beyond this there are many more examples as well.
