If there were only three kinds of nucleotides, there would be 27 different types of codons for a genetic code.

We know codons come in triplets. These triplets can be arranged in nine different ways to identify genetic codes. When multiplied, we will find that 27 different types of codons can be made from these rearrangements. This means in a genetic code, there are 27 different kinds of codons.
