Answer:

The focal length of a lens is the distance from the lens to the focal point.

For a convex lens the focal point is that point at which parallel rays will be focused after passing thru the lens.

Note:  For a concave lens the rays will diverge after passing thru the lens and will appear to come from a point on the same side of the lens from which the parallel rays strike the lens,
