Area of a square is  side*side.

side = (x - 2)

Area = side*side = (x - 2)*(x - 2)

x(x - 2) -2(x - 2)

x*x - 2*x - 2*x -2*(-2)

x² - 2x - 2x + 4

x² - 4x + 4

Therefore area = x² - 4x + 4   square units.

Hope this helped.
