Why does An apple, potato, and onion all taste the same if you eat them with your nose plugged

It is very hard to distinguish between apple, pear and potato when they all look the same. Taking away the sense of smell then makes it even harder to distinguish between all three. The nose and mouth are connected through the same airway which means that you taste and smell foods at the same time.
