how would the meaning of the following passage change if Wiesel used the word "suffering" instead of "anguish"

Anguish means severe pain

suffering means hardship or distress

although both mean to feel a degree of pain Anguish is more associated with severe. So if the word was changed to suffer it would make the pain seem less severe and more bearable.
