Ok so lets say D= Dog And C=Cat 
 D+C = 54

D = 8C

Now, substitute 8C for D in the first equation to get: 


8C + C = 54 

Solving for the cat gives us C = 6 

D = 8 x 6 = 48 

Dog Weighs 48 Pounds
