The deceased body had internal organs removed and was then embalmed, to ensure against decay. Depending on status, it was buried with ornaments, weapons, food and servants, to allow the deceased to continue in the next life. In the old kingdom, the kings were entombed in massive pyramids, but in later periods were buried in caves in the Valley of the Kings.
