A number,y,is 2 more than 3 times another number,x, the sum of the 2 numbers is 26. What are the two numbers?

y = 2 + 3x
x + y = 26

Substitute:
x + (2 + 3x) = 26
4x + 2 = 26
4x = 24
x = 6

6 + y = 26
y = 20
