x = 9

Explanation:

So when you solve this you get:  2x + 20 = 38

You would then subtract 20 from 38 to isolate the 'x' variable, thus giving you 2x = 18.  From here you would divide by two to completely isolate x.

x = 9.  The variable 'x' equals 9.  If you put the number 9 into the equation in place of 'x' then you would get 38 = 38, therefore proving that x = 9
