Activities within an economy can create a split in the spread of wealth sometimes either increasing or decreasing poverty. For example if new businesses open this creates job opportunities and increases employment rates (a main factor behind poverty). Another example would be inflation. Inflation negatively affects low-income earners and causes them to have to spend more or their basic needs which can trap them into poverty.
