Best explanation for the rise of slavery in the colonies

The large plantations in America needed workers. There weren't enough workers to work the fields at the plantations. Slaves were a plethora, and were cheap compared to paying someone every time they worked. Also, they didn't have to pay as much tax when they used slaves instead of workers.
