4 + | 7 - m| = 5...we want the absolute value on one side by itself, so we will subtract 4 from both sides.
| 7 - m| = 5 - 4
| 7 - m| = 1

7 - m = 1              -(7-m) = 1
-m = 1 - 7             -7 + m = 1
-m = -6                   m = 1 + 7
m = 6                      m = 8

so m = 6 or m = 8
