Suppose you have a 4 liter bucket and a 7 liter bucket.You need 5 liters of water for an aquarium.Explain how to get 5 liters of water if niether of the buckets are marked.

Now, fill the  7 liter bucket (A) completely and pour the water in to an empty 4 liter bucket (B).

The bucket B with 4 liter capacity will be completely filled in 4 liters of water and the water left in the bucket A will be  3 liters.  

⇒ Bucket A has 3 liters of water.   ... (1)

Now, drain off bucket B completely and fill it HALF.

Half of 4 liters is 2 liters.

⇒ Bucket B has 2 liters of water.   .... (2)

Combining both the quantities of A and B , we get:

A +  B = 3 + 2  = 5 liters

That is how we can measure the 5 liters of water form the given two buckets A and B.
