The South grew cotton, and labor intensive crops, and they found out that they can make MASSIVE profits if they used slaves, instead of picking the crops by themselves, and the UK and France relied on the South for their cotton, so slaves ultimately got the harvest done much more quicker, resulting in the plantation owners getting a lot of money.
