In mathematics, the plus-minus sign generally indicates a choice between two values, one of which is the negation of other. Simply put, if there is an assignment to find what 5 ± 5 is, you would do it twice as both 5 + 5 and 5 - 5, then write that the two solutions are 10 and 0, respectively.
