3x + y = 17     1
x+2y =49         2

x+2y=49
x = 49-2y

Putting the value of x in equation 1
3x + y = 17
3(49-2y) +y =17
147-6y +y =17
147-17 = 6y-y
130 =5y
130/5 =y
26 = y
and x = 49-2y = 49-2*26 =-3
