Since the denominator is 4, and you have 2 whole numbers, each whole number equals to
[tex]1 = \frac{4}{4} [/tex]
You have 2, so
[tex]2 = \frac{8}{4} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{8}{4} + \frac{3}{4} =[/tex]
[tex] \frac{11}{4} [/tex]
