Why did workers need labor unions? What were their goals?

Before Labor Unions came into existence, workers had no power to fight against big businesses and were forced into working long hours with very little pay and in dangerous conditions. Labor Unions were something that, although still not as powerful as big businesses (until the Progressive Era), had the power to fight against the extreme circumstances workers found themselves in.
