Answer: Phoenicians were probably the first colonizers of the Mediterranean...before ancient Greeks. They were interested not in conquering a land but in trade across the sea. Phoenicians founded their colonies across all the Mediterranean. One of the effects was the spreading their ideas and perhaps also their writing.
