By 30,000 BC, the Neanderthals had been replaced by Homo Sapiens. The Neanderthals, formally classified as Homo neanderthalensis, became extinct about 40,000 years ago and were separated from the Homo Sapiens about 600,000 years ago. In their peak period there were about 70,000 Neanderthals in existence.
