The Athenian Empire is better known as Delian League and began in the Persian Wars. The Delian League constituted an alliance of Greek city-states which was ruled by Athens and created in 478 BCE to liberate eastern Greek cities from Persian power and to defend in face of potential revenge attacks from Persia after the Greek victories at Marathon, Salamis, and Plataea in the early 5th century BCE.
