Banned, underground political parties contributed one source of opposition. These included the Social Democrats (SPD)—with activist Julius Leber—Communists (KPD), and the anarcho-syndicalist group the Freie Arbeiter Union (FAUD), that distributed anti-Nazi propaganda and assisted people in fleeing the country.
