Answer: A keystone species is a species that is essential to the survival of other organisms in an ecosystem.

Example:

If a plant (eg. a berry bush) was killed by an epidemic, the ecosystem would see a drastic increase in species that eat that specific plant (eg. mice). As a result, any secondary predators (eg. eagles) at eat the first species would end up dying as well.
